The Talons of Weng-Chiang

The Doctor as Holmes. What a twist of genius. I wanted the sketch to look like a postmodern take on the cover of some penny dreadful. Reproduction poster here (430 kb) if you want to recreate your own Palace Theatre. I’ll leave it to you to supply your own grizzly murders!

The Masque of Mandragora

This is such a visually rich story, I could have devoted an entire sketchbook to it. I love Portmeirion, the location for this story & The Prisoner, I’d love to do more art that examines the setting one day. For this sketch, though, I decied to work on this one scene, using a quick pastel sketch I did last time I visited as a reference. I’ve tried to imbue it with the sense of joy of being there. It’s sort of the sense of excitement you used to get as a child hearing the bells of an ice-cream van. A lovely sensation. I strongly recomend a visit to Portmeirion. Also, check out the short documentary I put together on visiting a few locations in the area last year… Doctor Who on Location in North Wales
